Experiment Support Scientist at Sanford Underground Research Facility
Mark Hanhardt is an experiment support scientist at the Sanford Lab, a Ph.D. student at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and a part-time supervillain. Mark fulfilled the role of Operations Manager for the LUX (Large Underground Xenon) dark matter search until its completion and now works as a researcher on the CASPAR (Compact Accelerator System for Performing Astrophysical Research) project.
In addition to his work assisting the various projects at SURF, his nuclear astrophysics research in pursuit of his Ph.D. and his ongoing attempts to develop superpowers, Hanhardt is passionate about STEM outreach. He participates as often as time allows in talking to students and community organizations about the experiments underway at SURF and their impact on the world. He is fascinated by the stars and dedicated to unlocking the secrets they hold about where we come from and using that knowledge to help understand where we are going.
